Cates Farm Family

We are a small family backyard farm located in Gray, Maine. Meet all of the members of our family - from Talulah the pig to Dorothy the chicken!

Dorothy & Henrietta - the Matriarchs

Flock Inception - Spring 2017

"I want chickens and we'll start with six hens." This is how the Cates Family Farm began. I grew up on a small family farm and I've felt nudged to have farm animals throughout my adult life. Thankfully my husband is an amazing sport and when I made the statement above, he was all in.

We came home with six beautiful girls that we coddled that entire summer. We had so much fun with them, watching them and learning about them. The next spring came and I discovered a term called chicken math. Six chickens was no longer enough and so we added six more. Each spring we've had new arrivals, some in chick form and some as pullets (teenagers).

Dorothy and Henrietta are our remaining ladies from that original flock and each year they're so gracious in welcoming the newest members. The flock is still coddled and loved and in return, they provide some delicious eggs and so much joy.

George

Arrival: February 25, 2023 (born October 11, 2022)

I decided in the fall of 2022 that it was time to bring a great love back into my life, pigs. The plan was to get three pigs the following spring, so I worked on a plan for a barn. The plan came together quickly and the barn would arrive in May 2023, now to find some pigs! My friend Hope referred me to Rock Bottom Farm who amongst many other animals, raised and sold Kunekune pigs. I asked if we could visit and off we went. These pigs were everything I wanted and so we made a plan for spring piglets.

In late January 2023 I contacted the farm and asked if I could spend a morning helping with chores, in an effort to familiarize myself with a routine and also ask questions. Near the end of my visit, we made a stop in one barn and there sat George. He'd been spoken for but unfortunately had a rough go of it health-wise, so he remained at the farm. I asked if I could sit for a while and then asked what the plan was for him. As I sat with him, I knew he was meant to be mine. Not my plan and we didn't have anywhere to put him but guess what, my heart didn't care. George had me at oink and I love him so very much.

My husband is pretty handy and built a little house for him to sleep in out in the chicken area. We brought him home and the journey of pig ownership began. He was comfy and happy out with the girls until May, when his new home would arrive. Around that same time I received an intriguing text from the same farm owner saying, "I have a great friend for George." Sweet baby boy Roy was about to enter our lives and hearts.

P.S. George’s favorite snack is apples

Roy

Arrival: May 20, 2023 (born February 24, 2023)

So if you pay close attention to the dates thus far, you'll see that Roy was born the night before we picked George up. Before we left the farm with George, Melissa asked if we wanted to hold two newborn piglets. They carried out two little cuties from inside the house and handed them to us. They had them inside due to the mother not accepting them after birth.

Either my husband or I held Roy when he was only hours old and who knew I'd be driving home with him three months later. We went back in late April to see him again and we both loved him instantly. We decided he was meant to be ours and we'd head back in a month's time to bring him home.

Melissa had been sending us pictures and videos, sharing how unbelievably sweet he was, so I decided to go to this pick up on my own. He slept the whole way home and once we arrived, he was not keen on being separated from me. Because of the scenario with the mother, Roy had spent a good portion of his life inside Melissa's home. Roy was a house pig and loved his humans, creating a bit of a challenge initially.

To this day, Roy is pure sweetness and loves to be loved. He's always game for me to snuggle and kiss him, even finding his way on my lap... often. He and George are very attached, Melissa couldn't have been more right. We had two boys, it was time to start planning for the little girl that I wanted to add.

P.S. Roy’s favorite snack is strawberries

Talulah & Stanley

Arrival: September 2, 2023 (Talulah born June 27, 2023 and Stanley born July 4, 2023)

My original plan was to have two females and one male. As you've read thus far, this was not at all how it was going but I was ok with it. I realized the souls that were meant to be with us were finding us, so I decided to trust the journey we were on.

Melissa was keeping me posted as new piglets arrived in an effort to find our girl. Several liters were born and there were two females we were deciding between. One was a half sibling of George's, which I loved and so, she was our girl. Melissa sent videos and pictures of her as she grew and during that time, we gave her the name Talulah.

July 19th is a pivotal date in the timeline of our pigs. We had family visiting from PA and we arranged to visit baby Talulah on that date. We all arrived at the farm and shortly after, I held her in my arms. That was it, I couldn't wait to get her home. At this same time, Melissa's husband walked out of the house with a teeny tiny pig that they didn't expect to live. He was born a week after Talulah but was barely half her size. Failure to thrive was the term they used. Nonetheless, they were trying their best to support his survival.

"His name is Goldie, does anyone want to hold him?" he asked. I declined the offer, knowing how uncertain his future was but not my mother-in-law, Diane. "I'll take him," she said. We walked around the farm and she snuggled him close that whole time.

We left that day so happy to have met Talulah. There was  also a great deal of talk about Goldie. My mother in law asked if I would keep her posted on that little pig and wouldn't you know it, after that day he began to grow. She updated her Facebook profile picture to a picture of him and began to share the updates on his well-being.

Melissa was sending me those updates almost daily and little Goldie was starting to get stronger. Talulah was doing great, one of the biggest in the litter and one of the most active. We started to make the plan for pick up, while considering the addition of a fourth pig - Goldie. We made the final decision in August and told my mother in law. Tears flowed, she was so happy! Goldie was officially renamed to Stanley.

You see, Stanley is an important name in the Cates family. My beloved father-in-law was named Stanley and how sweet to bring that name back into our world. It seemed fitting that he have that name given the connection with Diane. This was a match made in heaven - again. Stanley was growing like crazy now, living off of goat's milk and roaming the farm. He was living a really great life.

My friend Hope has a magical goat farm (Sunflower Farm) and guess what, lots of goat milk. She was so kind and generous, offering as much milk as we needed to keep Stanley healthy and strong. We brought these two piglets home and you can bet Diane was not going to miss it. She spent the weekend helping us get the babies acclimated to their new surroundings and two big brothers.

These four pigs have created the sweetest family. They argue just like any other siblings; however, the snuggles far outweigh the grumbles. We adore these pigs, and many others do too. We're lucky, they're lucky and if you get to meet them - you'll be lucky too.

P.S. Talulah’s favorite snack is everything, and Stanley’s favorite snack is bananas.

Pam, Steve, & the Rest of the Gang

We’ve been married for almost 14 years now. Our families have known each other since we were both very young and our life together is a testament to “what is meant to be, will be”. What started this life of ours? A connection about our dogs. We both adore our kiddos and 15 years ago, it was the passing of Steve’s dog that caused me to reach out and offer support. The rest is, as they say, history. Our household now consists of four dogs: Gwen, Gnash, Pippy and Skeeter. The first three are rescues from TN and Skeeter, she’s our German Shorthaired Pointer purchased as a pup. The vast majority of our lives are spent here at our home. We love it in Gray and have worked very hard to create a peaceful sanctuary that we’re happy to share. Neither of us shy away from hard work, in fact on most weekends, you’ll find us working around the house on the endless list of projects. We’re a son, a daughter, brother, sister and maybe the happiest role of our lives together is aunt and uncle. We both find great joy in spending time with and supporting our nieces and nephews. Our home is their home.

Talulah’s Garden is my dream; however, there is no bigger supporter than Steve. This all began a few years back, in the dead of winter. I was a newly registered yoga teacher sorting out how I wanted to teach. I love being home and I love hosting gatherings, how about yoga here in the yard? Since that day, Steve has talked through ideas, helped me organize and even played pig sitter during the early days of their attendance at yoga. I’ve felt inspired to make this dream bigger each year because of his unwavering support. So if you come to the yard and by chance, see him on that evening, just know how important he is in all of this.

Snack Donations!

George, Roy, Talulah and Stanley are very big fans of apples and pumpkins. Last fall we gathered pumpkins from neighbors, friends and family for the gang to enjoy through January. This is such a wonderful treat for them and we’d love to continue this effort. If you have a pumpkin you’d like to donate at the end of the fall season, we’d be so grateful. They enjoy carved or whole, just no painted pumpkins please. Apples are another item they enjoy daily. Thanks to even more generosity, we gathered enough apples to last until March of this year. This is another huge help to us, so if you have apples you’d like to share with these cuties, we’d be so grateful. Contact Pam to coordinate a drop off.
